How to Keep Your House Ready for Guests and Still Live In It

Raise your hand if you love cleaning. Okay, now all of you come clean my house. Beside grocery shopping, cleaning is my least favorite chore. The problem; I love hosting play dates and dinner parties. I want my house to be company ready all the time.

Instead of spending my life cleaning, I do these simple tricks to keep my house from looking like a tornado blew by.

Everything Has A Place

All of the organization gurus will tell you that every thing in your house needs a home. If you do not have a set place for every item, then get rid of it. Not only will you stay organized, your house will not look like it belongs in an episode of Hoarders.

10 Minute Drill

When the house starts looking like one giant play room, it's time for a 10 minute drill. We take 10 minutes to pick up around the house. Anything that isn't in it's place gets put up. It's amazing how fast rooms are cleaned when you have everyone chipping in at the same time.

I'm not the only one who dirties up the house, so I'm not the only one who cleans the house. The boys have chores they are required to do every day. We also have extra chores a couple times a week. As the mommy, I love the help. As a wife, I know that one day my daughter-in-laws will love having a husband that knows how to clean the house.

Clean All Like Items

Do you clean one room at a time from top to bottom? Change it up, and save some time. For instance, clean all the mirrors at the same time. It's easier and faster to carrier around the glass cleaner and cleaning cloth and clean all the mirrors at one time. Do the same with dusting, cleaning toilets, vacuuming, and all the other 72 chores. Pick one or two things to clean each day. You won't feel overwhelmed and your house will look great.

Clear Surfaces

All the real estate agents said, "Amen!" When you sell a home, you must keep the counter tops, tables, and floors cleared. It is the fasted and easiest way to make your house look less cluttered. Less clutter means your house looks cleaner. If you are in a time crunch before having guests over, clear all the flat surfaces. It will make the biggest impact.

Kitchen Sink

Hello, my least favorite chore. Keeping the kitchen sink empty is an ongoing battle. It's also the one thing I clean every day. Just a side note. I think there will be no dish washing in Heaven. Make the job a little easier by unloading the dishwasher in the morning, and then loading after every meal. Or if you're like me, just get it done as fast as you can before starting dinner.

Cleaning is a chore, but it shouldn't consume your life. Don't expect your home to be perfect. Your guests know you live there. Do your best, and invite people over.
