An Expensive Diamond Ring

For our 9th anniversary, Kevin and I went to Fayetteville, AR, for a weekend getaway. While we were there we spotted this quaint jewelry shop and decided to go take a look. After all it was our anniversary, and I had already told Kevin that I wanted an upgrade for my engagement ring for next year's anniversary gift.

We browsed until we came to the diamond rings. They were gorgeous, and we saw some lovely rings that we wanted to try on.

The first was an oval cut diamond and it was only $20,000. The next was also an oval cut diamond and it was $49,000. I was flabbergasted! I had never held anything of that much value in my hand before. It was a once in a life time experience for me to put something so beautiful and rare on my hand.  I wanted to take a picture, but I was a little afraid to ask. They might think we were casing the place.

So, should you pick a family owned jewelry store or a chain? This list will help break down the pros and cons of local vs. national jewelry stores.

Local Jewelry Stores
They carry rare cuts and can customize a ring to your exact specifications.
You work with the same person throughout the process of selecting a ring.
If you move around the country, you will not be able to have your ring serviced or checked.
They don't always have the best prices.

National Chain Jewelry Stores
You can get your ring serviced at any location and they usually offer good warranties.
You can customize a ring, but not to the extent of a local jeweler.
They have great incentives and their pricing is competitive.
They usually do not carry rare cuts of diamonds.
You don't always get to work with the same person at a large jewelry chain.

When it is all said and done, the decision is yours. Kevin got my ring at a national chain jewelry store and I love it. Look at what best suits your needs and make a decision based on those needs. Just please never buy your engagement ring at the same place you buy your toilet paper. A girl will be wearing that ring for a very long time, so it is best to way all of your options.

Have fun shopping.
